  • if it weren't for dance...

i'd be a ball of fat.  dance class is the only thing that gets me to the gym...

found these articles written by one of my salsa teachers' (in L.A) students :

Let the Rhythm Melt the Weight Away
"Ladies, who is the clueless authority that said exercise had to be a boring chore? Let’s all hang him by his toes. The best way to shape and sculpt those lovely silhouettes of yours is to get them moving in whatever way gets them to move again and again. So why not sculpt with revitalizing music coursing through your being, a gentleman on your arm (or not), a smile embracing your lovely face, and the night at your beck and call! In order to claim the kind of curves that demand respect, drive men to their knees, and beg your little black dress to dazzle, you must make exercise a way of life and not “a thing to do.” You accomplish this by making it fun, exciting, invigorating, and dare I say, thrilling. Make exercise something you channel passion through. ...

...A dancer’s body is one to behold, wouldn’t you say! Here is a big secret. Most devoted dancers don’t do much extra besides dance for that fabulous body. I personally cannot wait for my workouts because I set the floor afire through salsa myself. I let the divine trance of Latin dance melt me into form, and boy, do I enjoy every sizzling note. Studies have shown that from one night of aerobic dancing you can shave off one-half to one pound and then some (details in Health 101). That’s what I call encouragement to dance again. Not only do you carry a beaming smile, unwind the toils of the week by releasing stress, destroying endorphins, and get better at dancing, but you also get a sculpted body as the cherry on top. In fact, you even burn more calories for the next few days as an extra bonus (details in Health 101). I challenge you this month to dance the night away at least once and see if you don’t come back for more “exercise.”

I can hear you all now with all your reasons for not being able to, but I’ll do you one better and make it even easier. Maybe you can’t get to the night scene, but there is no reason you cannot dance. Take a class in your gym or through professional classes. It’s great to learn something new, and classes nowadays cater to every level of dancer.

Expand your rhythmic horizons to any and all styles of dance. Let the music take you where it will. Try swing, fox trot, quickstep, tango, hip-hop (you know you secretly love it), samba or any of dozens of others, as long as you love it and are left thirsty for more. I know enjoying exercise is a revolutionary idea, but it’s true, ladies. It can be done... The passion and results you’ll invoke are as fantastic as they are liberating.

The reason this feels so wonderful is because the music and dancing stimulate the same endorphin release as that of a good tub of ice cream, except a stronger amount without the guilt, and a body to die for as a reward."

In this article we explore the monumental benefits of dance on your overall life ...Studies have shown that ... Dancing is one of the highest calorie burns around and, in my opinion, one of the most beneficial. The bigger picture is that dancing helps to destroy stress, which is a plague upon our busy lives. Stress puts our bodies in self defense mode, which affects our moods, our performance in our daily lives, as well as our waist size. High stress leads to your body releasing high levels of cortisol into your system, which means more closet time for your little black dress (article on stress to come). Remember that your body is not trying to give you a hard time. It is simply protecting itself, so let us work with it. Dancing reverses this whole ugly chain of events. Not a bad deal, wouldn’t you say?

Let me put this all in perspective for you. One night of vigorous dancing ... that dazzling night of lights and feverish flavor just shaved off nearly a third of a pound with a huge smile on your face if you made an effort to move. Now, here is the bonus to all that twirling and laughing. I call it the “after burn.” Let’s reminisce if you will. I want you to go back to that one night where the drinks were flowing, the company was superb, every song was your song, and life just coursed through your every fiber. Remember how sore you felt the next day from all that dancing? Well, that’s the “after burn.” You see, your body isn’t done working once you stop dancing. In fact, the work has just begun. Your body needs now to repair the muscles you just beat up from all your frivolity. You are now burning significantly more calories that night because your body is repairing the muscles while you sleep. You are burning higher fat while you sleep! Can it get any better than that? Well, actually it can, not to mention that from a good enough “workout” your metabolism is naturally heightened by up to 30% for the next three days as your body continues to do repairs from that one night.

Wow... To sum that all up, one night of fun equals nearly 900 calories, plus extra fat burned while you sleep, plus 30% metabolic boost for the next three days equals a grand total of anywhere between 1400-2000 calories burned from one night of fun. Please make a note not to forget about the crucial stress release you get from all this, which will really benefit your life all around by making you become more productive, sleep better, and enhance your moods and relationships overall. If you are not sold by now, then I quit. You see, the concept is to personalize exercise so that it becomes a way of life. If you find your niche, you might not need to “exercise” another day in your life. Wow, what a modern concept! I say it’s time for us to take back our health by personalizing fitness to suit our passions, not what they tell us. I propose a toast to heavenly curves and a long healthy life with a smile on our faces! Cheers!"

    ah,  dance <3

    as opposed to...?

  • damn

    they've gotten to me.

on my way back to my car yesterday after work, i unexpectedly ran into a couple of my old 3rd grade english elective boys from last year.  i loved those kids.  as they biked by and saw me, they stopped, called out to me, and we just kinda exchanged pleasantly surprised looks for a bit.

as we waved good bye, i heard one of them say 「懐かしい、オリビア。。。」

it was so good to see them. i was feeling pretty shitty all day, and that totally made my day.
on my drive back home, i was smiling and thinking about the funny things that happened in class last year, and then, i started tearing.

damn, they got me.  i didn't realize just how much they've affected me.
    it's nice.
    and i really miss them.

  • one of the best feelings in the world

every wednesday night, i take this one core muscle/balance class at my gym.
    it's called "ball exercise."   (amused).

anyway, in every class, the teacher plays cds featuring random mixes of english songs that range from awesome, but cheesy blasts from the past to more contemporary tunes.  they're all remixed into some horribly cheesy techno concoction (am i using that correctly?).  my favorite prior to last night was the one song that has a girl saying, "omg... her butt is so big.  she must be one of those rap guys' girlfriends..." or something like that.   i can't remember the exact lyrics, but yeah, you get the point.

so, last night, i was in the "ball exercise" class and this song comes on:

Oh! I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
    Yeah Wanna dance with somebody
    With somebody who loves me

does anyone remember these lyrics...?  i almost cracked up when the song came on...
    chooo~ natsukashiii yo ne.
brought back so many memories, and yet, i still couldn't remember who sings it and what it's called.

Oh I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
    Yeah Wanna dance with somebody
    With somebody who loves me
Oh I wanna dance with somebody
    I wanna feel the heat
    Yeah Wanna dance with somebody
    With somebody who loves me
    (Somebody who)
    (Somebody who)
    Somebody who loves me
    (Somebody who)
    (Somebody who)
To hold me in his arms
    I need a man who'll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last
    So when the night falls
    My lonely heart falls

it was killing me, so i checked it up online first thing this morning.  (i love testing time at school)
yup, thank you, whitney.  i thoroughly enjoyed your "I wanna dance with somebody (who loves me)" song last night.  you'd think that the lyrics would give away the song title, but nope, i had no clue.

as amusing as it was, it got me to think about dancing for a bit.
    and yea, definitely.
one of the best feelings in the world is dancing with somebody and completely jiving with him/her.

  • mmm...

i think i should start writing in this thing again.

i re-read my last entry and was amazed at how many grammatical mistakes i made- and they were not done on purpose.  i also find myself being at a loss for words more often than not; i can just never remember that one word i'm looking for.

    there's this one word...
god, i've forgotten it probably a billion times, and now i've forgotten it once again
hold on, i can do this...
    ... mcgyver...
    you'd describe mcgyver like this...
c'mon... good with his hands, can make a bomb outta hair ties...
    crafty?  no....      handy? no.

    ah!
    resourceful!
    that's it.
why can't i remember that damn word?

i hear that this is common after living in japan- or any non-english speaking foreign country for that matter- for an extended period of time.  i've joked around about becoming mute since my japanese isn't improving nearly as quickly as my english is declining , but i think there may be some truth to that joke.

    how embarrassing.

ok, so i will write here in attempt to salvage what english ability is left in me, and i will blog on mixi to further embarrass myself in japanese cuz i just haven't had enough.
(and yay! i might be getting internet at home again, so i'll actually have time outside of work to write (^^)v )

  • how the hell do i...?

xanga's gotten too fancy for me.

i haven't written a xanga entry in about 1/2 a year and now xanga's gotten too fancy for me.
it took me about 5 minutes to navigate myself through the new xanga layout and find my way to writing a new entry.

    well, here i am.
    i'm back in japan again.
i went home and back.  i went to china and back.

and now it's almost time to say goodbye again.
    i hate this part.

    i miss chau.
    i miss yumi.
    and
    i will miss poni.

  • Women・女性の方

God, I just found out that another one of my girlfriends got broken up with.  I don't get it.  This may just be bitching on my part, but I'm fucking sick and tired of men breaking up with women that they aren't good enough for to begin with.  It really pisses me off...

But what bothers me the most is how women act so similarly when it comes to men, their relationships with them, and breakups.  I think one of the worst things women do is let the men/love interests in their lives affect our self confidence.  When will we learn that we are great people and that we don't need the men in our lives to validate ourselves?  We have family and friends for that.  More importantly, though, I think we need to look within ourselves for that validation.  Ladies, please love and take care of yourselves.  Men are important aspects in our lives, but there are so many other things going on in our lives.  You should be your #1.  Find the strength you need within yourself so that you can make yourself happy.

This was my message to my friend, but I think it applies to most women:

"to be honest, maybe i'm biased, but i think you're way to good for him.

about the other girl.  who the eff cares about her.  she's nothing.

he's not good enough for you.

and this is what is supposed to happen.

i know this isn't going to be easy to hear or take in and especially to accept, but please trust me on this.

you can and will do much better.

try your best to not compare yourself with the other girl...

because in all honesty, it means nothing.

she is not better than you.

you are an amazing woman and nothing she is (or isn't) will change that.

trust me, love.  i've been through this... and it sucks and it's ugly...

it hurt so bad that I literally felt physical pain in my heart

    but i healed.

    as will you.

just try your best to keep your head up and remember that you are a great person

nothing and no one will change that if you believe in yourself.

    i love you.

    remember to love yourself."

  • e.e. cummings - japanese?

"I thank You God for most this amazing day; for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes."
    -e.e. cummings

when i read this poem, i thought it was written by a japanese person.
given that e.e. cummings is such a poetic genius, maybe the japanese got it right all along.
